Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar found himself in the middle of responding to one of the most talked-about topics of Indian cricket- the captaincy debate around Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Agarkar played a lot under the captaincy of Sourav and retired from international career after playing the T20 World Cup under Dhoni back in 2007. He saw Kohli become the Indian captain and the progress that the team has made under him till now.

Meanwhile, in an interaction with Times of India, Ajit Agarkar opened up on his thoughts on the never-ending debate of Indian cricket. He first spoke about Ganguly’s approach to captaincy saying that he was the most outspoken person he had even seen.

“Sourav was aggressive. He was one of the most outspoken people I have seen,” Ajit Agarkar said.

He further said that Ganguly, Dhoni and Kohli have different styles of captaincy and that they did what they thought was right for the team.

“Sourav’s personality was different, Virat has his own, MS Dhoni has his own. Whatever helps your game, you try to do that, whether as a captain or a player. Maybe being aggressive and vocal helped Sourav on the field. It is probably the case with Virat as well.”.

Why Compare Between Successful Captains- Ajit Agarkar

When asked to choose between Kohli and Ganguly, Agarkar said that it is not mandatory to choose rather celebrate their success as India captains.

“And why compare? Both (Sourav and Virat) played in different eras. Both did well for India. Both are great captains. Both have been terrific players.”

Meanwhile, it was under Sourav Ganguly that India won their last Test match at Headingley back in 2002. Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid scored centuries in that game as India won by an innings and 46 runs. For the record, India have been unbeaten at Headingley since 1967.
