Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has adopted a unique method to bond with the young cricketers in the squad ahead of IPL 2022. Incidentally, the Capitals have acquired many young talents for the upcoming season.
Ponting, who landed in India a couple of days back, completed his mandatory isolation and joined the training session. The former Australian captain was happy with the energetic vibe among the players.
Speaking on a video shared by the Delhi franchise on their official social media, Ricky Ponting said:
“At the moment, we need to really focus on what we need to do to get ready for game one. I had a great first session with the players. There’s an energetic vibe around the team, which is what we always strive for.”
He added:
“I have told the boys to keep their doors open when they are in their rooms and get to know each other. I am going to have breakfast, lunch and dinner with all the younger guys that I don’t know. When you show love towards the younger guys as a coach or a senior player, you know that they are going to give it back.”
Meanwhile, Ricky Ponting has had a positive impact on the Delhi Capitals side ever since he joined the franchise a couple of years back. The performance of the side has also got better with the team reaching the playoffs in the last two seasons.
“Guys like Prithvi, Axar and Nortje will also have their roles” – Ricky Ponting
The World Cup winning captain further added that senior cricketers will have to take additional responsibilities within the squad to guide the young cricketers.
“The guys who have been in the Delhi Capitals camp for a while definitely have the responsibility of guiding the youngsters in the team. Rishabh’s Captain, so he’s going to do that anyway, but guys like Prithvi, Axar and Nortje will also have their roles and responsibilities within the team,” Ricky Ponting added.
Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in their first match of the season, which will be played on 27 March 2022.
