Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir praised Rohit Sharma after he led Mumbai Indians to their fifth IPL title. Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Gambhir said that if Rohit doesn’t become India’s ODI or at least T20 skipper, its India’s loss and not Rohit’s On the other hand, he criticised RCB skipper Virat Kohli after yet another disappointing IPL season. He said that a captain is only as good as his team referring to both Kohli and his weak RCB team. Gambhir also spoke about replacing Kohli as RCB skipper. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra countered Gambhir on this point.

Speaking on his Facebook page, Aakash Chopra first said what Gambhir exactly said on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy abilities.

“Gautam Gambhir believes that it is the nation’s misfortune if Rohit Sharma is not made the Indian T20I captain because he is the most successful captain in the IPL.”

Chopra then countered Gambhir’s point saying that would Rohit had been successful in place of Kohli with the same team.

“But I have a question that if Rohit was given the RCB team, which is there with Kohli, will he have won two, three or four out of the five titles MI have won? Rohit as a captain is outstanding, I love him to bits but can the Mumbai Indians’ success story be equated with India, that is my question. Just because Kohli’s team does not do well, does it mean that is Kohli’s fault?”

In the process, Aakash Chopra also backed Kohli to stay on as RCB skipper. He said that itis wrong to blame Kohli for the team’s performance because of his own performance. Kohli with 466 runs ended up as the second-highest run-getter for his team.

Referring to Gambhir’s comment on Rohit being named as the T20I captain of India after this performance, the former Indian opener said that this will not happen any time soon.

Aakash Chopra said that Rohit is unfit and there is a lot of mystery regarding his fitness. Rohit being unfit and out of the team does not work in his favor of getting the captaincy. Also, the next ICC World T20 event is a long time away for which the BCCI too will not worry about changing their captain in the shortest format of the game.
