The variations in the shots and batting style were one of the main reasons why AB de Villiers was considered as modern day legends. ABD contribution to South African cricket cannot be written off very easily. de Villiers absence since last year has left a void in the Protea middle order but the side has been good in trying many options.
In AB de Villiers recent interview with Gaurav Kapoor in the original YouTube series of Breakfast with Champions, he revealed the reason behind his retirement ahead of 2019 World Cup. AB de Villiers felt that he was ‘cornered’ and it turned out to be one of the reasons behind his call on a career.
AB de Villiers said “I was keen to play in the World Cup, but I left, I retired. So it was a very sensitive situation. For the last three years of my career, I was labelled as a guy who is picking and choosing when I was playing and when not.”
AB de Villiers led his team efficiently till the semifinals of 2015 World cup where they were heartbroken due to the stellar performance of a star-studded New Zealand side.
It is to be noted that his announcement came as a bolt form the blue on his official mobile application. The controversial ‘sandpaper gate’ series ended up as his last appearance in the International formats.
“I felt cornered. It’s always been about the team, it’s never been about myself. But I found myself in a position where I had to make a decision where it’s going to look like I’m just thinking about myself,” said de Villiers. de Villiers also said that spending some time with the family has certainly rejuvenated him now.
This edition of Indian Premier League wasn’t an easy outing for the legend as Royal Challengers Bangalore ended up the last position in the points table. However, AB de Villiers gave his best with his 360-degree shots and giving his hand in certain crucial moments of the game.
