The 2026 ICC T20 World Cup is set to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka, with Ahmedabad and Kolkata emerging as the prime contenders to stage the semifinals.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has shortlisted eight venues across the two countries for the tournament, scheduled for February–March next year. Among Indian cities, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai have made the list, while Sri Lanka will contribute three venues, including two in Colombo and one in Kandy.
The final venue for the title clash is yet to be confirmed and will largely depend on which teams reach the final. For instance, Ahmedabad could host the final if Pakistan does not qualify, whereas R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo may be chosen if Pakistan reaches the summit match.
Conditional Semifinal Planning
The ICC has designed a flexible plan for the semifinals based on the teams progressing to the last four. If either Pakistan or Sri Lanka reaches the semifinals, the respective match will be staged in Colombo. Conversely, if neither team advances, both semifinals are expected to be held in India, giving Indian cities a significant role in the knockout phase.
This conditional approach ensures logistical convenience and fairness for the participating teams while also catering to fan engagement in both host nations. The format of the tournament will mirror the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, featuring 20 teams split into four groups of five.
Teams and Tournament Structure
The tournament will include all 13 Test-playing nations, alongside Canada, the Netherlands, UAE, Nepal, Oman, and Namibia. Italy will also make its ICC global event debut. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, which is divided into two groups of four. From there, the best two teams in each Super Eight group will move on to the knockout semifinals.
India, the defending champions after defeating South Africa in the 2024 final, will enter as favourites. The ICC is expected to announce the full schedule and groupings soon. This tournament will mark India’s first hosting of a T20 World Cup since 2016, when West Indies clinched the title after beating India in the semifinals and England in the final.
