Bangladesh cricket has been shaken after former national women’s team pacer Jahanara Alam made shocking claims of sexual harassment during the 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. According to Alam, a former national selector allegedly harassed her while on tour, a revelation that has prompted widespread outrage across the country and within cricketing circles.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has since assured the public that the matter will be treated with utmost seriousness.
‘Zero Tolerance’ Policy and Strong Response from BCB
Responding to the controversy, BCB President Nazmul Hassan declared that the board would have “zero tolerance” toward any incident of sexual harassment, regardless of the individual involved. He stated firmly, “No one will be spared — not even me or any senior board member if found guilty.” This statement underscored BCB’s commitment to addressing misconduct transparently and without bias.
Hassan further explained that the issue has not only hurt the reputation of Bangladesh cricket but also highlighted the need for structural reform within the women’s cricket setup. “This is not something we can ignore. We are determined to get to the truth,” he added. His remarks came amid public calls for accountability and justice for Alam, whose courage to speak up has inspired debates about the treatment of female athletes in Bangladesh.
Independent Investigation and Administrative Action
The BCB announced that an independent inquiry committee has been set up to investigate Jahanara Alam’s allegations. In the meantime, four officials linked to the women’s national setup — including a manager, physio, coach, and another staff member — have been reassigned to special duty until the inquiry reaches a conclusion. This move, according to the BCB, is meant to ensure a fair and impartial investigation process.
While maintaining a strong stance, Hassan also stressed the importance of due process. He said, “The investigation must be allowed to run its course, and everyone accused should have the right to defend themselves.” The board has promised that disciplinary action will be taken swiftly once the findings are complete.
A Test of Credibility for Bangladesh Cricket
This incident has placed the Bangladesh Cricket Board under intense scrutiny, both domestically and internationally. Many observers believe the handling of this case will define how seriously the BCB enforces its “zero tolerance” promise. The cricketing community now watches closely as the investigation unfolds, with hopes that justice will prevail and that the case marks a turning point for women’s safety and dignity in Bangladeshi sport.
