After playing for Hampshire in the 2019 season, this will be Ajinkya Rahane‘s second county assignment.

After finishing his two-Test assignment with the Indian team against the West Indies, veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane will play for English county side Leicestershire in division two.

Rahane, a former captain of India, recently returned to the Indian team with great success during the World Test Championship final against Australia earlier this month.

After his IPL stint with Chennai Super Kings was over, Rahane signed a contract with Leicestershire in January, agreeing to play eight first-class matches as well as the entire Royal London Cup (a domestic 50-over competition) between June and September.

He returned to the Indian Test team, which prevented him from joining his county side right away after the IPL was over. As a result, the plan had to be abandoned.

After the two Tests in the West Indies, which are scheduled to end on July 24, Ajinkya is scheduled to fly directly to England and sign on with Leicestershire for the rest of the campaign.

He will play in the Royal London Cup in August and could play in four County games in September because he is not likely to be involved in the white ball plan, a BCCI source familiar with the situation told PTI under the condition of anonymity.

After playing for Hampshire during the 2019 season after being cut from the 50 over World Cup team, Rahane will be serving his second county term.

Rahane recently reached 5,000 runs in the conventional format in 83 Tests, scoring 89 in the Indian first innings of the WTC final.

While the majority of the top Indian players will concentrate on 50-over cricket, Rahane will play more red-ball games during the month of September before returning to India for the full domestic season, which will be followed by a tour of South Africa in December.
