The former all-rounder from South Africa, Albie Morkel has opened up on the recipe behind the consistent success of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League. Notably, Morkel has played five IPL finals under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Although his number doesn’t suggest so, Morkel was a very handy cricketer. He always lifted his game when his team needed the most with both bat and ball. He was also the go-to man for Dhoni during his stint in India with the Super Kings.

Speaking about Chennai’s consistent run with three IPL trophies and reaching the playoffs in all the season they have played, Albie Morkel believes MS Dhoni – the bran matters the most. Praising the former India skipper, the Proteas cricketer said that he is arguably the best ever T20 player to play the game and he runs the show every time he is out there in the field.

“Dhoni plays a big role. We all know how big Dhoni is in India, and the brand of cricket he plays. He is one of the best T20 and white-ball players ever to play the game and if you get him as a leader, it is going to bring success as he knows how to get the best out of his players,” Morkel told Sportstar on the sidelines of the Road Safety World Series.

Throwing light on Chennai Super Kings performance in the IPL since the beginning, Albie Morkel said that it came from keeping the core group intact. He also pointed out that having the same captain over the years helps to build a mindset among the players which plays a crucial role to bring success to a side.

“It all comes from keeping your core group of players together for a long time and have the same captain, Dhoni, for all seasons except for the two years when they weren’t part of the competition. Consistency is their secret. Over the last few seasons, they have made the finals eight times out of 10,” he said.
