Afghanistan’s rising spin star, Allah Ghazanfar, has been sidelined for the next four months due to a severe injury, missing both the upcoming IPL 2025 season and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Ghazanfar’s absence from the tournament, which will be held in Pakistan, was confirmed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on February 12, 2025.
Injury Details
The ACB revealed that Ghazanfar suffered a fracture in the L4 vertebra, specifically in the left pars interarticularis, which will require a minimum recovery period of four months. This injury occurred during Afghanistan’s recent tour of Zimbabwe, ruling him out of all cricketing activities, including his participation in the Champions Trophy. Ghazanfar will remain under treatment during this time, with no immediate return to the field.
Impact on IPL 2025
In addition to the Champions Trophy, Ghazanfar’s injury will also prevent him from featuring in the IPL 2025 season. The 18-year-old was due to play for Mumbai Indians after being picked up in the Mega Auction for Rs 4.8 crore in November 2024.
Ghazanfar was considered a key player for the team’s spin department alongside Mitchell Santner. This setback follows a promising start to his career, including his stellar performance in the Emerging Teams tournament, where he was named Player of the Match in the final for his two-wicket haul.
Ghazanfar’s injury is a significant blow to both Afghanistan’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy and Mumbai Indians’ plans for IPL 2025.
