‘Amazing Innings’: Wasim Akram’s Heartfelt Praise For Abhishek Sharma Wins Hearts

Pakistani legend Wasim Akram met Indian youngster Abhishek Sharma after the India-Pakistan clash in Dubai on Sunday. He praised Abhishek’s 135-run knock against England in a recent T20I and advised him to stay focused. A video of their warm interaction has gone viral on social media.

“Amazing innings. I saw that innings. Keep it up. This is the start… Keep your head down and keep performing. All the best,” Akram can be heard telling Abhishek in the video.

Abhishek Sharma‘s 135 became the highest individual T20I score by an Indian, surpassing his Punjab teammate and childhood friend Shubman Gill’s 126* (99) against New Zealand in 2023. It also ranked as the sixth-highest T20I score among full-member nations.

He reached his century in just 37 balls, making it the third-fastest in T20Is for full-member teams, behind South Africa’s David Miller and India’s Rohit Sharma (both in 35 balls).

Abhishek smashed 13 sixes in his innings, the most by an Indian in a T20I. Among full-member teams, only Finn Allen (16), Sikandar Raza (15), and Aaron Finch (14) have hit more in a single T20I innings.

Abhishek credits hard work and team support for his standout performance

“You can ask any player; such matches are very few (and far between),” Abhishek had said after that match. “I would say it was all possible because of the efforts I put in the practice, the backing I got from the coaches and the captain when I was not getting the runs or not bowling well,” Abhishek said in the post-match press conference.

“All these things calculate (work out well) at the end, and I had the belief that on my day, I will play an innings like this,” he added.

India dominated England with a 4-1 victory in the T20I series, followed by a 3-0 sweep in the ODIs, gaining strong momentum ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy.

In the tournament, they secured six-wicket wins over both Bangladesh and Pakistan. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century and Kuldeep Yadav’s three-wicket haul proved decisive against the Men in Green.
