Anil Kumble Urges Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to Focus On Present, Not 2027 World Cup

Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble has shared his thoughts on the future of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, advising them not to set their sights on the 2027 ICC World Cup just yet. According to Kumble, it’s better for both players to focus on enjoying their present form and contributing to India’s short-term goals rather than planning for an event four years away.

He mentioned that though their inclusion in the 2027 setup would be “ideal,” thinking that far ahead may not be practical. Instead, the emphasis should be on staying consistent and adapting to the demands of the game as time progresses.

Kumble highlighted the immense experience and class both players bring to Indian cricket, noting that their performances have already set high benchmarks for the next generation. However, he cautioned against overburdening them with long-term expectations, especially considering the evolving nature of modern cricket. His advice reflected a balanced approach — appreciating their greatness while allowing them the freedom to take things one year at a time.

Focusing on the Present and Enjoyment

Kumble emphasized that both Kohli and Rohit should play with a sense of enjoyment and passion, rather than the pressure of thinking about the future. He believes their presence itself motivates younger players, and their immediate focus should remain on performing in the current phase of their careers. “They should just enjoy playing and not think about 2027,” Kumble suggested, pointing out that cricket has become a game where adaptability and current form are more important than long-term projections.

The former leg-spinner also remarked that mental freshness and enjoyment often reflect in a player’s performance. By not burdening themselves with distant goals, both stars can maintain their energy and focus for upcoming series, including the high-profile tours ahead. Kumble reiterated that India should build a balanced mix of experience and youth, and both Kohli and Rohit will play a key mentoring role in that transition.

New Roles and Upcoming Series

With Rohit Sharma no longer leading the ODI side, Kumble noted that this could work in his favor as he can now concentrate fully on his batting. Without the captaincy responsibilities, Rohit might find it easier to express himself more freely on the field.

Both he and Kohli are set to make their return to international cricket after a seven-month break, with their names included in the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Kumble believes their presence will strengthen the team’s morale and provide invaluable experience to the younger players as India prepares for another competitive season.
