Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has said that changes in the playing XI for the Boxing-Day Test at MCG will make a little impact on the outcome of the game. England lost the first two Test matches by big margins are chasing the series from behind. A loss at MCG will mean that they will lose yet another series at home after being 2-1 down against India earlier this year.

Talking to former Australian pacer Brett Lee, Vaughan said that the lack of bench strength in current England is a sign of worry for the team. He pointed out that the English side does not have a lot of players who have been knocking on the selectors’ doors with consistent performances.

“Australia are better than they were a year ago. Alex Carey has made them a better side. For England, I think Mark Wood will play. You’ve got to play a spinner. There is talk of Zack Crawley and Jonny Bairstow coming in, but I don’t think whoever they bring in will do anything better. They don’t have anyone waiting in the wings.”

Vaughan also pointed out that no one in the current England Test squad can replace Joe Root as the captain. There are talks of Root being removed as Test captain if England fails to win this Ashes series.

“Generally, in a team, you see two or three players who are ready to become the next captain. But I don’t see anyone in this Test team who seems like he can be the next England captain apart from Ben Stokes. It’s taken a while for England to become a formidable white-ball force, but it has been at the expense of the Test team.”

Vaughan concluded his argument by saying that this England side cannot win this Ashes series. Having not played well at home in recent times has what England playing badly in the ongoing tour.

“I didn’t give (this) England (team) much chance of winning the Ashes here. For a team to arrive in Australia and do well, I think you need to have played well in your own backyard. The England Test side have been very inconsistent for a while now” concluded the former England skipper.
