England skipper Ben Stokes wants to ‘move on’ from the Jonny Bairstow dismissal furore ahead of the third Test of the 2023 Ashes series. Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal during the Lord’s Test sparked the ‘Spirit of the Game’ debate. England lost the game by 43 runs, and are trailing 2-0 in the five-match Test series.
The England wicket-keeper batter was stumped by Alex Carey as he walked out of the crease before confirming if the ball was dead. Many criticised the dismissal, stating it to not be in the spirit of the game. England skipper Ben Stokes also expressed that he if was the skipper, he would have overturned the decision, as he would have not wanted to win in this manner. However, ahead of the third test, Stokes wants everyone to move on from the controversy.
“I don’t think we can galvanise as a group any more than we are, to be honest. There’s been obviously a lot of noise around the incident last week at Lord’s but, from me as a captain and from the England team, I think the best thing that everyone needs to do is just move on from it,” said Ben Stokes.

Former England skipper Michael Atherton feels Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal reflected “flabby cricket” by England during the Lord’s Test. He expressed that the Australian skipper Pat Cummins was right to not withdrew the appeal and call back Jonny Bairstow. He added that the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ has nothing to do with Bairstow’s dismissal.
“Cummins said the dismissal was a fair one and at no stage thought of revoking the appeal and calling back Bairstow. There was certainly no requirement for him to do so. The Spirit of Cricket does not come into it. It was a dozy bit of cricket from Bairstow to allow Carey the opportunity and reflected much of the flabby cricket played by England in this match,” Atherton wrote in his column for The Times.
