Usman Khawaja reaches his first 100 in England

Usman Khawaja, the opening batsman for Australia, scored his first Test century in England and inspired his team’s comeback on Day 2 of the first Ashes Test.

At Edgbaston in Birmingham, the opening game of the five-match Ashes series pits Australia against England.

Khawaja and fellow opening batsman David Warner were given the ball by the hosts after England declared at 393 for 8 on the first day.

The two batters finished the day at 14 for no loss. But on Day 2, Warner was dismissed by his arch-enemy Stuart Broad.

The Baggy Greens were in trouble at 29 for 2 after Broad dismissed Marnus Labuschagne, the top-ranked Test batter in the world, on the very next delivery.

After that, Khawaja and Steve Smith put up a 38-run partnership before the former Australian captain was caught LBW by England captain Ben Stokes in the 27th over.

Even though Khawaja kept losing wickets, he still seemed at ease and stitched an essential 81-run partnership with Travis Head for the fourth wicket.

Before Moeen Ali dismissed Head in the 46th over, both batters had reached their half-centuries.

In addition to maintaining a positive scoring rate and neutralizing the English bowling attack, Khawaja was the picture of composure and poise.

The 36-year-old and Ashes debutant Cameron Green forged a crucial partnership for the Australians, putting together a 72-run stand for the fifth wicket.

The two batters revived Australia’s innings in the second and third sessions of Day 2 before Moeen struck again, dismissing Green for 38 off 68 pitches.

Khawaja quickly reached his first century on English soil by cutting Stokes for a boundary in the 69th over, which came shortly after Green was dismissed.

Using 12 boundaries and two sixes, Khawaja needed 199 deliveries to reach his century. The other three came in Australia.

This was Khawaja’s fourth century against England and his fifteenth overall. In England, Usman Khawaja scores his first century.
