Former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra made a light-hearted comment about England after the fourth Test in Manchester ended in a draw on Sunday, July 27. In a playful tone, Nehra suggested that all-rounder Washington Sundar could adopt more dogs and name them after “Lord’s” and “Manchester,” as he performed well at both venues.
He also humorously added that Ravindra Jadeja could do something similar by naming his horses after these grounds. Nehra’s comments came in response to the drama late on Day 5, when England skipper Ben Stokes proposed a draw with around 15 overs remaining, as Sundar and Jadeja approached their centuries.
After India declined the draw, a frustrated Stokes brought on part-timers Brook and Root to speed up play, during which both Indians reached their centuries. Interestingly, Sundar had earlier named his dog “Gabba” after India’s 2020/21 win in Australia. Nehra joked during the Sony Sports Network broadcast (via YouTube):
“Then there is Washington Sundar, who has a dog named Gabba after India won the Test match. Now, there will be a line. Now, he will name one Lord’s and another Manchester. When it comes to Ravindra Jadeja, you’ve to bring horses. Dogs won’t work here.”
Nehra emphasized that both Jadeja and Sundar fully deserved their centuries and supported their decision to keep batting until they reached the milestone, even though England, led by Ben Stokes, had offered a draw.
“As Shubman Gill, they’ve worked hard, so said they fully deserve their centuries.”
“He’d Never Take The Draw Offer” – Former India Pacer Criticises England Opener
Ashish Nehra also criticised Zak Crawley for unnecessarily involving himself in the heated exchange between Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja regarding the decision to continue batting for personal milestones. Speaking in the same video, he said:
“Even if Zak Crawley was batting, he wouldn’t have accepted the draw offer.”
Former India captain Ajay Jadeja also supported the decision of Jadeja and Sundar to play the additional overs to complete their well-earned centuries. During the same discussion, he stated:
“Even if I was there, I would’ve done the same thing.”
