The Asian Cricket Council President Jay Shah announced that India and Pakistan has been clubbed in the same group of the 2023 Asia Cup to be played in September. It will be a dress rehearsal for both teams before the 50-over World Cup that will take place in India in October-November.

India, Pakistan, and the qualifying team comprise Group 1 while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan will feature in another group. The arch-rivals India and Pakistan will meet one more time before the main event. A total of 13 matches will be played in Asia Cup 2023. Two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 4.

The top two teams would qualify for the finals.  Both teams meet twice during the Asia Cup 2022 played in UAE. They also meet in the opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup Super-12 game.
