Australia registered a comprehensive 10-wicket win on the 3rd morning of the 1st Test match at Adelaide Oval on 19th January 2024. Starting on an overnight score of 73 for 6, Mitchell Starc grabbed an early wicket of Joshua Da Silva.
Starc then got rid of Alazzari Joseph to leave West Indies on the back foot. Josh Hazlewood picked his 5th wicket dismissing Gudakesh Motie. Shamar Jospeh and Kemar Roach took West Indies into the lead before Lyon picked up the wicket of Shamar to bowl out West Indies for 120 setting Australia’s target of 26 runs.
Shamar Jospeh looked impressive with his bowling delivering a sharp bouncer to Usman Khawaja that hit his chin. Khawaja tried to move from the line of the ball but it was the helmet. The physio came as there was blood coming. Marnus Labuschagne and Smith finished off as Australia won the match by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match Test series.

Australia continue their winning formÂ
Australia dominated with a brilliant bowling performance in the first innings skittling out West Indies for 188. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood grabbed 4 wickets while Lyon and Starc took 1 wicket each. For West Indies, Kirk McKenzie scored a half-century, but debutant Shamar Joseph scored a quickfire 36 runs and put on 55 runs for the last wicket.
Australia lost 2 early wickets of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne picked by debutant Shamar Joseph. Travis Head came to the crease looking in great touch putting enough pressure on West Indies bowling that helped Australia take 95 runs lead. For West Indies, Shamar Jospeh grabbed 5 for 94 while Justin Greaves also and Kemar Roach took 2 wickets each while Alazzari Jospeh took 1 wicket to bowl out Australia for 283.
In reply, West Indies’ inexperienced batting line crumbled as Kraigg Braithwaite, Tangerine Chanderpaul, Alick Atahanze and Kavem Hodge fell in quick succession. Despite some fights by Kirk McKenzie and Justin Greaves, West Indies were not able to resist top quality bowling of Australia.
Shamar Jospeh could not do anything much in the second innings giving away 7 runs in his 1.4 overs without picking any wickets. He would be a certainty for the 2nd Test match to be played at Gabba, Brisbane.
It will be interesting to see if Usman Khawaja can recover in time for the 2nd Test match which is a day-night encounter. With this victory, Australia consolidated their top spot in the ICC 2023-25 World Test championship cycle.
