Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel has been fined INR 12 lakh for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against Mumbai Indians (MI). The team failed to complete their allotted overs within the required time at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 13, leading to a slow over-rate offense.
This marked DC’s first loss of the season, ending their strong start to the 2025 campaign. The hosts fell short by 12 runs in their chase of a 206-run target, despite a strong fightback from the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians. This is the first fine for Axar Patel since becoming captain at the start of the 2025 season.
His leadership debut in the tournament came in 2024 when former captain Rishabh Pant served a one-match suspension after three slow over-rate breaches.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the IPL media release read.
Axar Patel becomes the sixth captain to be fined for a slow over-rate in IPL 2025, following Riyan Parag, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Rajat Patidar, and Sanju Samson.

DC were targeting their fifth straight win and looked on track at 119 halfway through the chase. However, MI fought back with key wickets, and despite late efforts from Vipraj Nigam and Ashutosh Sharma, DC lost after three consecutive run outs.
“No need to worry much right now. I was happy with the way the pitch was responding, dew was on too. Had we held on our catches, we might’ve been chasing less tonight. Vipraj has been brilliant, confidence as a captain is high with three spinners are doing well.”
”Kuldeep’s season has been unbelievable, it’s working out nicely for him. We need to forget this game and move on,” Axar Patel said during the post-match presentation in New Delhi.
