A spirited Bangladesh side nearly scripted a memorable upset against South Africa in the Women’s World Cup in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Defending a total of 232, Bangladesh’s spin attack had the Proteas reeling at 78 for 5, leaving them on the brink of defeat. However, in a repeat of their earlier match against India, South Africa’s lower order once again rescued the team.
Nadine de Klerk, known for her composure under pressure, anchored the chase and guided her side to victory in the final over, dealing Bangladesh a gut-wrenching loss.
Emotional Aftermath and Captain’s Pride
The defeat hit Bangladesh hard, with emotions running high in the dressing room. Captain Nigar Sultana shared her heartfelt thoughts after the match, expressing both pride and sadness.
“First of all, I’m really proud of the way my girls fight till the last ball. And I’m sad because they are crying in the dressing room, because they are so young. And I’m really happy the way they have given their 110 per cent today,” Sultana said.
She further added that the team remained optimistic despite the heartbreak: “They are very emotional right now and they keep believing in themselves that we can get this win. So I think it was a great learning experience for us.”
The Bangladesh skipper’s words reflected the blend of courage and inexperience that defined her team’s journey so far. Their determination against a stronger opponent earned them respect, even in defeat.
Missed Chances and Lessons for the Future
While Bangladesh fought bravely, missed opportunities in the field cost them dearly. Dropped catches proved decisive — first when Chloe Tryon was given a reprieve, allowing her to play a crucial role in an 85-run sixth-wicket stand with Marizanne Kapp (56). Later, Nadine de Klerk was dropped on 26, and she went on to seal the game for South Africa.
Reflecting on these moments, Sultana said, “This happened in the England game as well. We managed to pick 5 early wickets but the match slipped away after the 30th over. During the break, we were talking about hitting the right lengths. The bowlers did really well. Unfortunately something happened in the middle which happens in the game of cricket. It was a good experience for us.” She emphasized that her young squad had displayed immense bravery since the New Zealand game.
In her closing message, Sultana reminded her team to stay motivated. “I will just say that everyone needs to be proud of their efforts. This is not our last game of the tournament. We have 3 more games left. We should be proud and we should keep our heads held high. We gave them a tough fight.”
Bangladesh will look to bounce back when they face Australia on October 16.
