The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made strategic appointments to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), with Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shellar taking on key roles. These appointments come at a crucial time when the ACC is navigating important decisions, including the hosting of the upcoming Asia Cup.

The Role of BCCI Representatives in the ACC

Rajeev Shukla is a well-known figure in Indian cricket administration. Having served as the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), he brings extensive experience and strategic insights to the ACC. His past roles in the BCCI include being a key decision-maker in various administrative capacities.

As an Executive Member of the ACC, Shukla will play a critical role in shaping policies and strategies for Asian cricket. His influence will extend to major tournament planning and financial decision-making.

Ashish Shellar, on the other hand, has played a significant role in Mumbai cricket. As a former treasurer of the BCCI, he has been instrumental in financial planning and governance. His expertise in administration makes him a valuable addition to the ACC board.

In his role, Shellar will be involved in administrative decisions, ensuring smooth coordination between ACC and BCCI. His presence will help India maintain a strong position in the ACC’s decision-making processes.

Impact of Jay Shah’s Elevation to ICC Chair

Jay Shah’s recent appointment as the Chair of the ICC led to these vacancies in the ACC. His elevation marks a significant moment for Indian cricket on the global stage, allowing India greater influence in international cricket governance.

Immediate Agenda for the ACC Board

One of the primary concerns for the ACC is the upcoming Asia Cup, tentatively scheduled for September. The tournament will be held at a neutral venue, with Sri Lanka and UAE emerging as the top contenders. Due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the ACC has decided to hold the tournament in a neutral location. This decision reflects the complexities of cross-border cricketing ties and diplomatic relations.

Future of Asia Cups (2025-2031)

The 2025 Asia Cup will feature 19 matches and will follow the ODI format. The decision to host it in a neutral country ensures smooth participation from all teams. Bangladesh will host the 2027 Asia Cup, which will have 13 matches. The tournament will strengthen cricket’s growth in the region.

While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is designated as the host for the 2029 Asia Cup, the tournament will be played in a neutral venue due to geopolitical reasons. Sri Lanka will host the 2031 Asia Cup in the ODI format, featuring 13 matches. This move aligns with the long-term vision of diversifying cricket in Asia.
