India captain Shubman Gill has been cleared by the BCCI to travel with the national team for the second Test against South Africa, even though his participation remains doubtful due to a neck injury. The injury occurred on the second day of the opening Test in Kolkata, where India ended up losing by 30 runs. Gill, who is 26, was forced to retire hurt in the first innings and could not take the field afterwards, eventually being moved to a hospital for further treatment. The second Test is scheduled to begin on November 22 in Guwahati, and his presence with the squad keeps hopes alive, even if the chances of him making the playing XI are slim.
In an official statement, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said, “Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025.” He further added that Gill will remain under medical supervision and that a final call on his availability will be taken closer to the match. Saikia’s continuation of the statement, “He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly,” highlights the uncertainty surrounding Gill’s condition as the crucial match approaches.
Nitish Reddy Withdrawn From India A Squad
With Gill unlikely to take the field, the BCCI has pulled all-rounder Nitish Reddy out of the India A series currently underway in Rajkot against South Africa A. Reddy had been part of the India A setup but was swiftly asked to join the national squad as a precautionary reinforcement. The Andhra all-rounder reached Kolkata on Monday evening, signalling the team’s proactive approach to preparing backup options.
However, he did not participate in Tuesday’s practice session, indicating that the management is still evaluating the best combinations and backup plans. Reddy’s withdrawal from the A team highlights the seriousness of Gill’s injury concerns and India’s desire to maintain balance in their batting lineup ahead of the second Test. His versatility and ability to contribute in multiple departments make him a valuable addition to the squad during this period of uncertainty.
Reddy’s Rising Chances For Guwahati Test
Nitish Reddy has been gaining attention for his recent performances, and with a Test century already to his name, he stands out as a promising replacement should Shubman Gill be ruled out. Being a right-handed batter also provides strategic variety to India’s batting order. His inclusion in the Test squad could bring both stability and flexibility. As the team prepares for Guwahati, all eyes remain on Gill’s recovery timeline, while Reddy quietly emerges as a strong contender for a spot in the playing XI.
