The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reiterated its stance on the newly implemented family travel guidelines for overseas tours. The policy, which allows spouses and children under 18 to accompany players for up to 14 days on tours lasting over 45 days, remains unchanged despite some players voicing concerns.

Former India captain Virat Kohli recently stated that having a family helps players maintain a sense of normalcy and balance. However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that the rules were established after extensive discussions and will not be relaxed arbitrarily.

He emphasized that the policy aims to foster team unity and discipline while also providing a structured process for players or staff to request exceptions. Any relaxation requires approval from the head coach before being considered by the Board.

Policy Amendments and Player Responsibilities

The current policy builds on earlier guidelines, which have existed since the tenure of BCCI President Roger Binny and even before. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when players were confined to bio-secure bubbles, the Board had relaxed its family travel rules to support players’ mental well-being.

However, with normalcy restored, the BCCI has introduced structured amendments emphasizing player presence during practice, team movements, and on-field responsibilities.

While the policy extends the duration of family stays compared to pre-pandemic rules, it also reinforces the need for unity and discipline. Saikia acknowledged that differences of opinion exist but insisted that the guidelines are in the best interest of the team and the institution.

Domestic Cricket Mandate and Nitin Patel’s Tenure

In addition to travel regulations, the BCCI has made it mandatory for players to participate in domestic cricket when not on national duty to remain eligible for selection. Any exemption from this requirement requires approval from both the chairman of selectors and the head coach, with valid reasons provided. The Board remains firm on enforcing this rule to maintain the strength of domestic cricket.

Additionally, Saikia addressed speculation regarding Nitin Patel, head of sports science at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Contrary to reports of his resignation, Saikia confirmed that Patel was given a three-month extension after his contract ended in December 2024, which will conclude on March 31, 2025. The Board will look for a suitable replacement after that.
