Cricket South Africa (CSA) has taken a strict stand regarding the return of its players from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. According to the initial agreement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was expected to release all overseas players by May 26, as the IPL final was originally set for May 25.
However, due to the extension of the tournament following the Indo-Pak conflict, the new schedule now sees the league stage ending only after May 27, with the final on June 3. CSA has refused to change its position and wants its players back by the previously agreed date.
This situation has caused problems for IPL franchises relying on South African players, especially as many of them have been selected for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. CSA head coach Shukri Conrad clearly stated that nothing has changed from their side and the plan remains to fly out on May 30, with players needing to be back by May 26 to prepare.
Key Players Affected and Ongoing Talks
Several key South African players are directly affected by this conflict between CSA and the IPL schedule. Players like Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, and others have all been named in South Africa’s WTC final squad.
These players are part of various IPL teams and their absence will create gaps during the last stages of the tournament. While discussions are ongoing between the BCCI and CSA at the administrative level, CSA’s Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe has confirmed that talks are still in progress, but the stance remains firm.
Shukri Conrad added that higher officials like Nkwe and CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki are handling the matter, but from a cricketing perspective, CSA does not intend to make any changes to their demands.
Franchises May Retain Non-WTC South African Players
Despite the tension, not all South African players will leave IPL early. Those not part of the WTC final are likely to stay with their IPL teams. This includes players like Dewald Brevis, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and others.
These players can continue to contribute to their respective franchises through the extended IPL season. Meanwhile, the WTC-bound players have been asked to report to Arundel, England, on May 31, where they will play a warm-up match against Zimbabwe from June 3 to 6 before moving to London. The WTC final is scheduled to begin on June 11.
