The Board of Cricket for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been awarded the Guinness World Record for hosting a T20 match with the biggest crowd attendance. This was the IPL final between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier this year.

The stadium hosted a record-breaking 1,01,566 spectators in the IPL breaking the previous record. BCCI made this announcement through Twitter:

“A proud moment for everyone as India creates the Guinness World Record. This one is for all our fans for their unmatched passion and unwavering support. Congratulations to @GCAMotera and @IPL.”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah also expressed his gratitude via his Twitter handle:

“Extremely delighted & proud to receive the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a T20 match when 101,566 people witnessed the epic @IPL final at @GCAMotera’s magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium on 29 May 2022. A big thanks to our fans for making this possible! @BCCI.”

After being revamped the stadium was inaugurated in 2021 and can host 1,10,000 spectators which are 10,000 more than the Melbourne Cricket Ground which has a capacity of 1,00,024. Since its inauguration, the stadium has hosted 10 international games and two playoff games of the IPL.

Motera was host to the second Qualifier and the Finals of the fifteenth edition of the IPL (2022).  It hosted two tests between India and England as well as five T20IS. Out of the two test matches played at the stadium one of them was a pink ball test match played between the two teams.

Before its renovation, the stadium had a capacity of 49,000 when constructed in 1982. This stadium will be host to several games including the finals of the World Cup next year being held in India.
