Former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed that the board was surprised by Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as the Test captain in 2022. He expressed that the decision was Virat Kohli’s personal, and wasn’t forced by the BCCI. Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s test captain following the South Africa series last year.

Sourav Ganguly’s comments came in the light of India’s loss against Australia in the World Test Championship final. Some have raised questions over Rohit Sharma’s ability to lead Team India. There have been suggestions to bring Virat Kohli back as the Test captain. However, Sourav Ganguly expressed his disagreement. Speaking to Aaj Tak, he said,

“No (on the board’s preparedness on Kohli giving up Test captaincy). Not after the South Africa series. I don’t know why Virat Kohli left the captaincy, only he can tell. There’s no point in saying that right now. Because the captain had left his role by himself. There’s no point in talking about this now.

I have my faith in Rohit Sharma: Sourav Ganguly

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly further praised Rohit Sharma. He expressed that the opener was the best choice for the team after Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain. Ganguly added that he has faith in Rohit Sharma’s leadership abilities, and he will do well in the future. The former cricketer said,

“He’s won five IPLs. Whenever he had been handed the opportunity to captain, like in the Asia Cup, he won. He was the best option. He’s led the team in the WTC Final as well this time around, even though we lost. We reached the World Cup semifinal, even though I didn’t play well. Before that (2021) we hadn’t even qualified (for the knockouts). I have my faith in Rohit. Only he and MS Dhoni have won the IPL five times. No one else.”
