The Board of Control for Cricket in India is looking to include two new franchises ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. However, the process is still on. It will require an analysis of the market as well as feasibility, said a top BCCI office-bearer.

“We are looking to have two franchises in next year’s IPL but we will have to see the market and also assess the situation prevailing in the country. We can’t guarantee a timeline because there are a lot of things we have to consider,” said Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal to IANS on Monday.

One of the franchise could be from the city of Ahmedabad. A bidding process for the franchises will have to go underway before any decision is taken.

While the plans for the addition of two new franchises are on, the BCCI will have to host a mega-auction for the next edition of the IPL. Barring two retentions and three Right-to-Match cards, the rest of the players will be part of the auction.

The addition of two teams will require a wider window to host the IPL. The BCCI has decided to wait and watch.

IPL 2021 to resume from September 19

IPL 2021 was suspended midway through the season in May. The tournament is believed to resume from September 19 in the UAE, with final scheduled on October 15.

The BCCI is in talks with cricket boards across the world to ensure the participation of foreign players. The franchises have confirmed, New Zealand players will participate in the second leg of IPL 2021. Uncertainty prevails over the participation of players from England and Australia.

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced the advancement of the Caribbean Premier League by four days to accommodate the IPL.
