BCCI’s Strict Message: No Bilateral Matches With Pakistan Post Pahalgam Terror Attack
India vs Pakistan

The recent terror attack in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, shook India to its core. As the country mourns the loss of innocent lives, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reiterated its long-held position: India will not engage in bilateral cricket with Pakistan.

What Happened in Pahalgam?

On April 22, 2025, in the serene hills of Pahalgam, a brutal terror attack claimed at least 26 lives and injured over 20 more. The attack occurred near the scenic Baisaran area, turning a peaceful locale into a site of horror. Among the victims were families and tourists. The psychological scar left behind is beyond measure. Shops shut down, and the usually vibrant region fell into eerie silence. The attack ignited national grief. Leaders across political lines united in condemnation, and social media erupted with prayers, condolences, and outrage.

BCCI’s Official Stance

In the wake of the attack, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla reaffirmed India’s stance, “We do not play with Pakistan in bilateral series because of the government stand… and we will not play with Pakistan in bilaterals going forward.” It’s a firm declaration—one not taken lightly in the cricket-mad subcontinent.

Shukla added, “But when the it comes to ICC event we play due to ICC engagement. ICC is also aware whatever is happening they Will to it.”

Devajit Saikia’s Heartfelt Response

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia echoed this sentiment, stating the cricket community was “shocked and anguished” and standing “hand in hand” with the grieving families.

Saikia stated, “The cricketing community is deeply shocked and anguished by the tragic loss of innocent lives in the gruesome terror attack at Pahalgam yesterday. On behalf of the BCCI, while condemning this ghastly and cowardly act with strongest possible words, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls. In sharing their pain and grief, we stand hand in hand at this hour of tragedy.”

India has not played a bilateral series with Pakistan since 2012-13, and the reasons go beyond cricket. Border tensions, terror attacks, and political dynamics have consistently blocked any revival.

Government’s Influence on Cricket Decisions

Cricket isn’t just a game in India—it’s national pride. And when national security is under threat, decisions around cricket mirror the country’s emotional state. The Indian government has long maintained a no-sporting-ties stance with Pakistan unless the geopolitical climate drastically improves.

IPL 2025: A Moment of Silence and Solidarity

During the April 23rd match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, players wore black armbands, and a minute of silence was observed before the game began. No cheerleaders, no fireworks. Cricket, even in mourning, gives people a platform to grieve together. The stadium became a temple of remembrance.
