Following the heartbreaking stampede incident in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to hold an apex council meeting. The meeting is expected to take place on June 14 and will likely be conducted virtually.
According to a BCCI source, “BCCI will call an apex council meeting on June 14 to discuss the IPL celebration and formulate new norms. The meeting could be held virtually.” The goal of this meeting is to create updated safety guidelines for post-title celebrations to prevent such tragic events from happening again.
Massive Crowd Turns Fatal in Bengaluru
The tragedy unfolded outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where an overwhelming crowd of nearly three lakh people gathered to witness RCB’s IPL title victory parade. Unfortunately, the situation turned chaotic, leading to a deadly stampede. Eleven people lost their lives, and dozens were left injured.
The Karnataka Police responded by filing an FIR against multiple parties, including the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee and RCB, citing their involvement in organizing the event. The stampede shocked fans and authorities across the country and highlighted serious concerns regarding public safety during large-scale celebrations.
Government Responds with Compensation and Support
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the public with a heartfelt response to the tragedy. “A major tragedy occurred during the victory celebrations. It happened near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased.
The government will provide free treatment to the injured. Eleven people died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident.” The government’s swift action in offering financial and medical assistance showed empathy towards the victims and their families, although it also emphasized the need for better preventive measures in the future.
RCB had finally clinched their long-awaited IPL title after 18 years by defeating Punjab Kings by six wickets in the IPL 2025 final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While the victory was historic and emotional for fans, the unfortunate incident that followed overshadowed the celebrations and became a moment of national mourning.
