Brian Lara, the cricketer from West Indies, is one of the most elegant batsmen of modern-day cricket. His high bat lift and classy footwork have always attracted the cricket lovers from across the globe. He has carried the legacy Caribbean cricket on his shoulder in the 21st century.

The Trinidadian had a happy knack of playing big innings and that too at a healthy strike-rate, which separated him from the rest. Since making his debut in 1990, he has been a phenomenon in those regions and widely accepted as the best batsman of this century alongside India”s Sachin Tendulkar.

Brian Lara names candidate who can break his record

Two years from his debut, Brian Lara broke the record of the highest Test and first-class score with knocks of 375 and unbeaten 501, respectively. The southpaw himself broke the record of the highest Test score when he smacked 400 against England in 2004 in Antigua to save West Indies from a whitewash.

Since then, it has been more than 15 years, and the record has remained intact. Recently, Australia”s David Warner came close to breaking the record with his unbeaten 334-run innings against Pakistan, but skipper Tim Paine chose to declare the innings shattering Warner”s dream of breaking Brian Lara”s record. This knock has reignited the debate, and Brian Lara himself has given names of few potential candidates who he thinks can break the feat.

“It would be difficult for Steve Smith to do it batting at No.4 for Australia. He is a great player, but he doesn’t dominate. You know a player like David Warner for sure. A player like Virat Kohli, who gets in early and gets set. He is a very attacking player. Rohit Sharma on his day. So they have got quite a group of players who can do so,” Lara said to India Today.

With a lot of cricket to be played in the next two years, including the ongoing ICC World Test Championship, it remains to be seen who finally manages to break the landmark, or it stays like that for another few years.
