Weather reports from the Meteorological Department were submitted by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in an attempt to retain the final hosting rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The legendary Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata was to have hosted the final originally on May 25, but with a one-week suspension, the match is now to be held on June 3.
With the weather reports predicting unfavorable conditions in Kolkata on June 3, the IPL governing body was weighing moving the final to Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This has created an atmosphere wherein CAB’s contention emerged that the weather prediction made weeks before is not reliable.
CAB’s Plea to BCCI

While the CAB launched inquiries with the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, and the Indian Meteorological Department at Delhi, seeking forecasts of the weather patterns in Kolkata on the 3rd of June, both reports stated that it was too early to make such predictions and that the accurate forecasts could only be made around the 25th of May. The CAB submitted the letter to the BCCI contending that to exclude Eden Gardens on merely speculative grounds of weather conditions would be unfair.
“The Association approached the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata asking for a report on the weather pattern expected in Kolkata on 3 June. The report from the Met office, which has been submitted to the BCCI, clearly states that it is too early to make such a prediction and it is only around the 25th of May that such a forecast can be made,” the report reads.
“We remain confident that things will work out because we have done a very good job in organising everything. Also, you can’t predict weather patterns so early and we have submitted all official documents to this effect,” a source told Rev Sportz.
The venue was given the rights to host both the IPL 2025 final and the Qualifier 2 match after the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the 2024 IPL season.
