Champions Trophy 2025: How Can Afghanistan Qualify For Semifinals After No Result Against Australia?
Afghanistan

The much-anticipated Group B clash between Afghanistan and Australia in the 2025 Champions Trophy at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium ended with no result due to persistent rain. Afghanistan, after winning the toss, posted a competitive 273 in their 50 overs, but Australia’s chase was cut short by rain when they were cruising at 109-1 in 12.5 overs. As a result, Australia confirmed their place in the semifinals, while Afghanistan’s chances of progressing became highly improbable.

Match Summary

Opting to bat first in a crucial contest, Afghanistan put up a solid total of 273 runs. Their innings was anchored by Sediqullah Atal, who played a composed knock of 85 off 95 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai provided a much-needed acceleration with 67 off 63 balls, ensuring a competitive score.

Australia’s bowling attack was led by Ben Dwarshuis, who picked up 3 wickets for 47 runs in nine overs. Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa also made valuable contributions, picking up two wickets each, restricting Afghanistan from crossing the 300-run mark.

Australia’s Chase Before Rain

Australia began their chase aggressively, with Travis Head leading the charge with a blistering 59 off just 40 balls. Skipper Steven Smith remained unbeaten on 19 off 22 balls. At 109-1 in 12.5 overs, Australia appeared in control before rain played spoilsport. Since 20 overs had not been completed in Australia’s innings, the match was declared a no result as per ICC regulations.

How the No-Result Affects the Tournament Standings

This washout confirmed Australia’s place in the semifinals, joining India and New Zealand from Group A. On the other hand, Afghanistan’s qualification hopes took a severe hit.

Afghanistan’s Qualification Scenarios

For Afghanistan to make it to the semifinals, England must thrash South Africa by at least 207 runs (assuming England bats first and posts 300). If England bats second, they must chase down the target inside 11.1 overs. Both scenarios are highly improbable, making Afghanistan’s qualification a mathematical long shot.

Afghanistan Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Thoughts

Despite the disappointment, Shahidi remained hopeful. He also admitted that Afghanistan fell short with the bat and could have pushed for a 300+ total.

Shahidi stated, “About the tournament, you never know. We still have hopes, hopefully England win big. Unfortunate that the game went without a result. Was a good game. I think we should have scored 300+ but they bowled well in the middle overs. 270 was a good score but we didn’t start well with the ball. Gave them too much width and gave them many hitting options. We’ll learn from this.”

With Australia securing a semifinal berth, attention now shifts to the England vs South Africa match, which will determine whether Afghanistan still has a chance. The semifinals promise high-octane clashes as the tournament heads toward its final phase.
