Chris Gayle Believes There Is No Reason Why Virat Kohli Shouldn’t Be Able To Dominate This World Cup

Chris Gayle has expressed his belief in Virat Kohli‘s ability to dominate the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup.

The renowned West Indian cricketer has faith that Kohli’s mental and physical resilience will help him overcome any challenging periods of inconsistent form.

Kohli has been one of India’s top performers across all formats in the past year. He still faces occasional fluctuations in his performance.

Gayle acknowledged that every player goes through phases where their form may dip. He highlighted the importance of mental toughness and physical fitness in overcoming such obstacles.

Gayle firmly believes that Kohli is known for his strong mindset. He has the potential to assert his dominance in the World Cup.

Gayle also expressed confidence in other players being able to make a significant impact as well.

Reflecting on their time as teammates at Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2011 to 2017, Gayle emphasized that players often experience periods of stagnation and require positive energy to uplift themselves.

Kohli has an impressive track record in ODI World Cups, having scored 1060 runs in 26 innings at an average of 46.82.

It includes six half-centuries and two centuries, showcasing his ability to perform at the highest level in the premier tournament.

Gayle also clarified that despite opting out of the recent Indian Premier League season, he has not retired from the sport.

He affirmed his intention to continue playing cricket, stating that he is still in good physical shape and that fans want to see him in action.

Turning his attention to the tournament itself, Gayle believes that India will face immense pressure as they enter the ODI World Cup as the home favorites.

Having won the tournament in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India’s senior men’s team has since experienced a drought in terms of securing ICC trophies.

Despite reaching the finals of the T20 World Cup in 2014, the Champions Trophy in 2017, and the World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, India fell short on all occasions.

Gayle acknowledged that the West Indies team is in a similar position, having last won an ICC trophy in 2016.

He stressed that the pressure will be on India, given the high expectations associated with playing at home and being considered the favorites to lift the trophy.

India’s campaign in the ODI World Cup will commence with a match against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

One of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the tournament will be the clash between India and Pakistan. It is scheduled to take place on October 15 in Ahmedabad.
