CSK Invite Indian Batter For Trial Amid Struggling IPL 2025 Campaign

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reportedly invited Urvil Patel for a trial during the latter part of the IPL 2025 season. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer confirmed that the five-time champions have shown interest in the Baroda wicketkeeper-batter, possibly signaling the beginning of a transition phase amid a disappointing campaign.

Urvil Patel shot to fame with a 28-ball century in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy—the fastest T20 ton by an Indian and second-fastest ever. Just days after going unsold in the IPL auction, he hit another blazing 36-ball hundred against Uttarakhand, cementing his status as a hard-hitting batter.

In 2023, Urvil Patel was with Gujarat Titans but didn’t play a match. A day after his release, he smashed a 41-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, among the fastest by an Indian. As per Jaffer’s sources, he was later called for a mid-season trial.

“I’ve heard, I’ve got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I’m surprised that he was not picked by any franchise, I was actually surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He’s been asked to trial there, so don’t know what’s cooking there,” Jaffer said on ESPN Cricinfo (2:45).

CSK Have Nothing to Lose After Playoff Elimination in IPL 2025

With CSK officially out of the IPL 2025 playoff race, the team now needs to focus on building a better squad for the next season. They lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, April 30, marking their eighth loss overall and fifth straight defeat at home.

Having secured just four points from their first 10 games, the maximum they can now earn is 12 points, which falls short of the requirement to break into the top four.
