2. India versus Pakistan, Quarterfinals, 1996 World Cup

India took on Pakistan in the second quarterfinals of World Cup 1996 played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on 9th March. Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a brilliant batting effort by the Indian batting line up. Navjot Singh Sidhu 93, Sachin Tendulkar 31, Mohammad Azharuddin 27, Sanjay Manjerkar 20, Vinod Kambli 24 and quick fire 45 off 25 balls helped India post 287 for 8 in 50 overs.

Defending the target of 288 runs to win in 49 overs, Pakistani openers Saeed Anwar and Aamer Sohail added 84 runs for opening wicket. The Indian bowlers performed well, kept picking wickets at regular intervals and restricted Pakistan to 248 for 9. For India, Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble took 3 wickets each. Pakistani captain Aamer Sohail was the top scorer with 55. India won the match by 39 runs.
