Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has been ruled out of the tournament owing to a toe injury. Injuries continue to haunt Indian camp as he now is the third player to sustain an injury after Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
It is to be noted that Shankar wasn”t a part of the game against England yesterday. Rishabh Pant was a part of the side to fill the much-debated number 4 position.
“Vijay got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery once again. His situation is not great and he won’t be able to take part in the tournament. He is going back home,” a senior BCCI official was quoted saying the same to the PTI.
BCCI: “Vijay Shankar sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe, which will require a minimum of three weeks to heal. The injury rules him out of ICC World Cup 2019. The Indian team management has requested the ICC to consider Mayank Agarwal as his replacement.”
Vijay Shankar was primarily included in the side because of his all-round abilities he would add to the playing XI. His presence gives an option for the sixth bowler and this news has really created some upset in the Indian camp.
A few weeks ago, it was reported that Jasprit Bumrah”s Yorker troubled Vijay Shankar in the nets and it caused a bit of issue on his toes. However, he was a part of the next games.
Mayank Agarwal is named as the replacement for injured Vijay Shankar. Mayank made his test debut during the Australian down under and an official confirmation regarding his inclusion is awaited. Mayank can also function as a back-up opener for the side as he created wonders for Karnataka side in the domestic format.
With two more games to go in the group stages, team India will be looking to finish on a high note. A win in any of the two games will confirm them a semis birth and the fixtures depend upon the results of other games.
India will play its next game against Bangladesh at Birmingham tomorrow (Tuesday).
