A few days back Darren Sammy shocked everyone when he revealed that he was called “Kalu” during IPL. Sammy was a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League in 2013 and 2014. Sammy took to social media and confessed that he and Sri Lankan player Thisara Perera were called “Kalu”. The Former West Indies T20 captain pointed this out on the back of “Black Lives Matter” movement which has stormed the world.

Sammy wrote that during his playing days in the IPL he was unaware about the actual meaning of the word. The all-rounder asked for an apology from his teammates from SRH back in 2013 and 2014.

Yesterday, Darren Sammy tweeted that a former teammate of his at SRH indeed had a conversation with him regarding this matter. The SRH player assured Sammy that he wasn’t targeted at SRH and the word ‘Kalu’ came from a place of love.

I’m please to say that I’ve had a really interesting conversation with one of the guys and we are looking at ways to educate rather than focusing on the negatives. My brother reassured me that he operated from a place of love 💕 and I believe him. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Recently in one of Ishant Sharma’s old Instagram post, the fast bowler referred to Sammy as “Kalu’. This post immediately went viral as Ishant came under the scanner. Sammy like many sports athletes was disturbed by the incident that happened to George Floyd in Minneapolis. Sammy than spoke his heart out on the incident that took place with him when he played at Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

“I will be messaging those people, you guys know who you are, I must admit at that time when I was being called as that word I thought the word meant strong stallion or whatever it is, I did not know what it meant, every time I was called with that word, there was laughter at that moment, I thought teammates are laughing so it must be something fun”, Sammy had said.
