The Delhi Capitals are considering making David Warner their captain for the 2023 Indian Premier League season (IPL). Rishabh Pant, their regular skipper, was involved in a near-fatal road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway on December 30 and appears unlikely to be fully fit for the IPL. The Delhi Capitals will have to make a decision on his replacement as captain and wicketkeeper soon.

According to a report in the Times of India, the franchise may approach Warner soon for the role. Furthermore, it has been learned that the Delhi Capitals may ask Sarfaraz Khan to play in Pant’s absence.

“Pant has been the mainstay of the middle-order. Warner has the experience of leading IPL teams. The management will speak to him. The middle-order needs an impactful Indian batter now. Sarfaraz will be asked to keep wickets if the combination asks for it. Meanwhile, the team will be looking for a domestic wicketkeeper or a strong batter,” the source said.

David Warner led the Sunrisers Hyderabad for several seasons

David Warner captained the Sunrisers Hyderabad for several seasons and led them to an IPL trophy in 2016 and have always made the playoffs all the seasons under his leadership.

Interestingly, the Delhi Capitals secured the services of England wicketkeeper Phil Salt in the December 23 auction last year. Though he was a backup option at the time, the franchise can consider him as Pant’s replacement. However, the team’s balance is likely to suffer as a result, and the franchise will be forced to bench either Mustafizur Rahman or Anrich Nortje.

With the need for a replacement for Rishabh Pant in the middle, India’s U19 World Cup-winning captain Yash Dhull could get a chance in the upcoming IPL season.
