Young South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis continued his stellar T20I form against Australia on Saturday, August 16. The right-handed batsman scored a rapid 53 off just 26 balls, including one four and six sixes, after Australia won the toss and opted to field in the third T20I at Cairns.
Despite South Africa losing a thrilling match by two wickets and dropping the series 2-1, Brevis etched his name in the record books. The 22-year-old now holds the record for the most sixes hit against Australia in T20Is played in Australia, smashing 14 maximums in just three games. For comparison, Virat Kohli had hit 12 sixes in 11 T20Is (10 innings) Down Under.
In the do-or-die clash at Cairns’ Cazaly’s Stadium, South Africa managed 172-7 in their 20 overs. The innings began shakily, with the Proteas losing three early wickets for just 49 runs. Skipper Aiden Markram was dismissed for 1 by Josh Hazlewood, Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored 24 before falling to Nathan Ellis, and Ryan Rickelton made 13, succumbing to Adam Zampa.
Brevis staged a brilliant counter-attack for South Africa but fell to Glenn Maxwell’s stunning catch off Nathan Ellis. Rassie van der Dussen remained 38*, struggling to accelerate. Chasing 173, Australia edged home with one ball to spare, Mitchell Marsh scored 54 off 37, while Maxwell’s unbeaten 62 off 36, including eight fours and two sixes, sealed the series win.
Dewald Brevis Tops The Run Charts In 2025 AUS vs SA T20I Series
Although South Africa narrowly missed out on winning the series, Dewald Brevis emerged as the top run-scorer in the three-match T20I clash. Across three innings, he amassed 180 runs at an impressive average of 90, boasting a striking strike rate of 204.54, including one century and one half-century.
Brevis started the series modestly with just two runs in the opening match in Darwin but followed it up with a sensational unbeaten 125 off 56 balls in the second T20I at the same venue. He looked set for another big score on Saturday before Glenn Maxwell’s exceptional fielding ended his innings.
