Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra feels that the days when teams had single captains across formats are gone. He expressed that Team India too will opt for different captains for different formats. Rohit Sharma is the Indian skipper currently, however, he hasn’t played T20I cricket in a while. In his absence, Hardik Pandya has been given leadership responsibilities.

Speaking on JioCInema’s new daily sports show, Aakashvani, Aakash Chopra expressed that Rohit Sharma will continue as the captain of Test cricket. However, Hardik Pandya who has fulfilled the stand-in duties will be the captain in the T20 format. He added that the all-rounder will be India’s captain at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. Aakash said,

“I don’t think we will see a single captain for all formats just yet, I think those days are over. Rohit Sharma will be the Test team’s captain till the WTC, but that’s not going to change – it is going to stay like that. Hardik Pandya is currently the captain in the T20 format, and I think he will continue to do so, and in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, you will see Pandya be the captain of the Indian team.”

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are my two candidates for India’s captaincy in the future: Aakash Chopra

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra further picked Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as his two Team India captaincy candidates for the future. He expressed that in the long-time these two can take up the leadership duties. Rishabh Pant has led the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, while Shubman Gill was vice-captain of the India U-19 team for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

“In One-Day cricket, Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain till the World Cup. But I think in the long term, in terms of India’s captaincy, it will be Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. These are my two candidates for India’s captaincy in the future,” said Aakash Chopra.
