ENG vs IND 2021: Surprised To See Shubman Gill Hide His Injury: Saba Karim

Former India cricketer Saba Karim feels Shubman Gill shouldn’t have travelled with the Indian squad to the UK if he was aware of his injury. The Asian Giants are currently gearing up for the five-match Test series but Gill’s untimely injury has halted their plans.

As per reports, Gill is likely to miss the first couple of Test matches owing to a calf injury. While BCCI is yet to make a comment on whether he will stay with the side and travel back to the country.

Saba Karim, who has represented India in a solitary Test match, stated that Shubman Gill should have not hidden his injury if he was aware. The former cricketer also mentioned that Mayank Agarwal should be given the preference to partner with Rohit Sharma against England.

“I was surprised to see Shubman Gill hide his injury. He has been travelling for a long time with the Indian team. There are physios and other medical staff tracking the fitness of the players. It’s very surprising in the first place, how it happened and why it didn’t come up earlier,” Saba Karim said while speaking on the podcast ‘Khelneeti’.

“Mayank should be given preference. We have been harsh towards Mayank. He was sidelined after just 2-3 failed innings,” he added.

Mayank Agarwal had an outstanding start to his Test career in Australia during the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But he lost favour after two poor outings during the last tour of down under. Agarwal, who has 1052 runs from 14 Tests at an average of 45.73 will look to grab the opportunity with both hands if it comes his way.

The first of the five Tests is scheduled to get underway on August 4 at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The Lord’s, Headingley, Kennington Oval, and Old Trafford will play hosts to the remaining four matches.
