ENG vs IND 2021: “Why Did They Appoint Moeen Ali As Vice-Captain?” Michael Vaughan Questions Management’s Decision

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan is upset after England’s loss in the fourth Test at the Oval. He has recently questioned the logic behind Moeen Ali’s selection as the vice-captain of the side in Jos Buttler’s absence in the fourth Test. The all-rounder’s performance were not upto the mark in the game which is why he is under the scanner at the moment. Meanwhile, Buttler is available for selection for the fifth and final Test match after the birth of his second child.

Michael Vaughan questioned Ali’s appointment as he has not even been a regular member of the side for the past two years. He said someone like Rory Burns who is a regular member of the Test side would have been a better option.

“I always question some of their thinking. Why did they appoint Moeen as vice-captain? He has barely been in the side for two years. It would have been a nice little boost for Burns, who is a regular in the side, to be made vice-captain this week on his home ground. It was a decision that puzzled me and perhaps put more pressure on Moeen who is still making his way back in the game,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

The England all-rounder scored 37 and a duck in the two innings of the Oval Test. He threw his wicket away in the first innings and was out by Ravindra Jadeja‘s accuracy in the second half. Moeen was not required with the ball in the first innings and took 2 for 118 in the second.

England might think of dropping him for the final Test given his diminishing returns in the Test series. Also with Buttler likely to return in Manchester, Ali might be asked to step down as vice-captain as well.
