Despite a 3-0 series whitewash against India, England captain Jos Buttler remains optimistic about his team’s chances in the upcoming Champions Trophy. England suffered a heavy 142-run defeat in the final ODI in Ahmedabad, capping off a disappointing white-ball tour after also losing the T20I series 4-1.
However, Buttler insists that the setbacks have not shaken their confidence as they prepare for the tournament, which begins on February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai. England will open their campaign against Australia on February 22 in Lahore.
Buttler acknowledged India’s dominance, calling them the “benchmark” in ODI cricket, but emphasized that England has yet to reach their full potential. “We’ve had moments in games but never enough to force results,” Buttler said. “The fact that we’re not playing at our best yet gives us something to work towards. If we can reach our peak, we will be a dangerous team in the Champions Trophy.”
Struggles Against Spin and Batting Concerns
England’s batting struggled against India’s spinners throughout the series. In the third ODI, despite a strong start from Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, England collapsed to 214 all out in just 34.2 overs while chasing a target of 357. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took six wickets across two matches, well-supported by Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, frequently dismantling England’s middle order.

However, Buttler dismissed concerns about England’s ability to handle spin. “We just need to be better and more effective,” he stated. “We have confidence in our ability, and players like Joe Root, one of the best players of spin, bring great value to the team.” While acknowledging England’s struggles, Buttler emphasized learning from the opposition and making improvements before the Champions Trophy.
Bowling Positives and Injury Update
Despite England’s defeats, leg-spinner Adil Rashid was a standout performer, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the ODI series with seven wickets. Buttler praised Rashid’s consistency, saying, “He’s bowled fantastically well throughout the tour and keeps improving, which is great for us.”
Meanwhile, Ben Duckett, who scored 38 runs in the final ODI, suffered a minor groin injury. Buttler expressed hope that the issue would not keep him out of the Champions Trophy. England, placed in Group B alongside South Africa and Afghanistan, will need to regroup quickly to be competitive in the high-stakes tournament.
