ODI cricket finally returned as the three-match series between England and Ireland began. England flexed their muscles from the very first over and exerted constant pressure of the Irish batting line up. David Willey starred as he snaffled 5 wickets and played a key role in wrapping Ireland for only 172. Curtis Campher gave an excellent account of himself in his debut match and scored a fine half-century.
After a slight hiccup, in the beginning, the experienced batsmen of England recovered and won the match comprehensively. Sam Billings top-scored with 67* and he was ably supported by captain Eoin Morgan who made 36*. The World Cup champions chased down the total in less than 30 overs and now lead the series 1-0. The second ODI between the two sides will be again played at Southampton tomorrow.
Since the 2nd ODI will be a day match the surface may assist the fast bowlers early on. If Ireland again bats first they will have to negate opening spell of David Willey and Saqib Mahmood.
The average first innings total at Southampton is 248, hence any captain that wins the toss will like to bowl first and chase down the target.
The openers of England Jason Roy and Johnny Bairstow will be hungry to score some runs after a quite first match. One of them can be easily made the captain of your squad. Exciting young batsman Tom Banton or Moeen Ali can also be picked in your squad as he has the reputation to score quick runs and pick wickets.
Captain Morgan should be included in the squad. Willey after his outstanding performance in the opening side should also be an easy selection alongside leg spinner Adil Rashid.
As far as the Irish team players the five players that can be included your team are Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien, Campher and two bowlers Andy McBrine and Craig Young.
