ENGvIND: Joe Root”s century helps England beat India by 86 runs to level the series

The England team bounced back to defeat India by 86 runs in the 2nd One-day international match played at Lords Cricket Ground, London just a few moments ago. England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat first. Joe Root century, Eoin Morgan and David Willey knock help hosts to post a competitive total. Chasing the target, India lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out.

England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat first. Like in the previous match, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow started on an aggressive note against the Indian Pacers. At the end of 10 overs, England openers scored 69 for 0. After the power play overs, Kuldeep Yadav was bought into the attack and got the breakthrough dismissing Jonny Bairstow for 38.

Kuldeep Yadav struck again as he dismissed Jason Roy for 40. The England captain Eoin Morgan and Joe Root steadied the innings playing the Indian spinners well-taking singles and hitting bad balls away for boundaries. Joe Root reached his half-century off 56 balls while Eoin Morgan too completed his 50 off 49 balls. Kuldeep Yadav took the important wicket of Captain Eoin Morgan for 53 off 51 balls. Both Eoin Morgan and Joe Root added 103 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Hardik Pandya dismissed Ben Stokes for 5 while Umesh Yadav dismissed Jos Buttler for 4. Yuzvendra Chahal got the wicket of Moeen Ali to leave England at 239 for 6. Joe Root and David Willey played with positive attitude putting pressure on the Indian bowlers in last few overs. Joe Root completed his century off 109 balls while Willey reached his maiden ODI fifty off 30 balls. England posted 322 for 7 in 50 overs.

Chasing 323 to win, the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan got the team off to a steady start adding 49 runs. Rohit Sharma was dismissed playing a poor stroke for 15 and soon after Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed. At the end of 10 overs, India scored 57 for 2.

After the power play overs, India lost another wicket of KL Rahul for 0 to leave visitors in trouble at 60 for 3. The Indian captain Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina steadied the innings with an 80 runs stand.

Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali bowled brilliantly in the middle overs. Moeen Ali got the big wicket of Virat Kohli for 45. The England bowlers showed their discipline and not allowed Indian batsmen to score runs easily.

Suresh Raina was dismissed for 46 off 63 balls. Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni added 37 runs for the 6th wicket but the asking rate was too much. MS Dhoni played slowly scoring just 37 off 59 balls.

England bowled out India for 236 in 50 overs and winning the match by 86 runs. For England Liam Plunkett picked 4 wickets, Adil Rashid and David Willey took 2 wickets each, Moeen Ali 1, Mark Wood 1.

England 322 for 7 in 50 overs ( Joe Root 113, Eoin Morgan 53, David Willey 50*, Kuldeep Yadav 3/68, Yuzvendra Chahal 1/43) beat

India 236 in 50 overs ( Suresh Raina 46, Virat Kohli 45, Shikhar Dhawan 36, Liam Plunkett 4/46) by 86 runs.

Indian captain Virat Kohli said:  It was a good batting wicket. The way we started with the bat was great. We lost 3 quick wickets in 3 overs which hurt us badly. Moeen Ali and Rashid built pressure on our batting. If it was one down we could have attacked more.

England captain Eoin Morgan said: It was a great performance by our bowlers after the loss at Trent Bridge. The toss worked in our favour as discussed in the morning. Joe Root played a great inning against the Indian spinners which were the backbone of our innings. David Willey also contributed well.

Man of the match Joe Root said: It was nice to contribute on a winning cause. We learnt from our mistakes in the T20I series and attacked Kuldeep Yadav more. The way we went today was outstanding and ruthless. Now hope for a much better performance in the deciding match at Headingley, Leeds.

With this win, England drew the series 1-1. The final and deciding match would be played be in Headingley,  Leeds on 17th July.
