Sri Lanka started the home season with crushing 278 runs over the visiting South African team in an opening test match played at Galle International Stadium on Saturday. It was an outstanding performance by Sri Lanka who outplayed South Africa in all departments.

In the first innings, Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first. The left-handed opener Dimuth Karunratne played a gem of knock remaining unbeaten on 158 out of 287 runs, Sri Lanka scored in the first innings.

The number 1 ranked test bowler Kagiso Rabada has become to pick the youngest bowler to pick 150 wickets in test matches who achieved the milestone on day 3. He took 150 wickets in 23 years and 50 days surpassing Harbhajan Singh record who took 150 wickets at the 23 years and 106 days.

By being bowled out for 73 in the second innings today, South Africa registered their lowest ever total since their readmission in April 1992. This is their 10th ever lowest total in test cricket. In the 2015 test tour of India, South Africa was bowled out for 79 in the third test match at Nagpur.

South Africa could not score big runs as they were bowled out for 126 in the first innings. Sri Lanka got a big lead of 161 runs in the first innings. In the 2nd innings, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 190.

Rangana Herath and Dilwuran Perera became the fourth pair of spinners to bowl in each innings of the test match. The first time such a rare incident happened, H Tumble and Noble Australia did it in 1902.
