Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has called on the ICC to address rule loopholes to prevent embarrassing incidents like the DRS confusion during the Super Over between India and Sri Lanka on Friday, September 26. He emphasized that the cricket governing body should act proactively instead of waiting for a major controversy to occur.
The Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash in Dubai witnessed a bizarre few minutes when Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka avoided being run out despite being out of his crease after the keeper hit the stumps. On the fourth ball of the Super Over bowled by Arshdeep Singh, Shanaka missed a yorker and attempted a run, only to be initially declared ‘run out’ by Sanju Samson.
However, the non-striker’s umpire had given him caught behind. Shanaka reviewed the call, and since the ball hadn’t hit his bat, the decision was overturned—allowing him to survive. Although India weren’t impacted by the incident, as Arshdeep removed the Sri Lankan batter on the very next delivery, Karthik suggested that Shanaka exploited a loophole in the rules to his benefit.
Karthik Calls Out DRS Loophole Exploited By Shanaka, Urges ICC To Act Promptly
Speaking during a discussion on Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik remarked:
“Looking at the body language of the batter, it’s a bit of a loophole that he’s used here because Shanaka knew that he hadn’t hit the ball, and he was running. He was told by either Kamindu [Mendis], or he got a bit of a thought to go for it. The fact is that it is a loophole, and I think ICC needs to look into it. They don’t need to wait for a calamity to occur before they react to a situation.”
“I think it is a situation where you can be proactive. We’re closing in on a game where this is going to happen, one ball, four runs to win, hits the pad, umpire gives it out, but it’s a boundary. Sadly, it becomes a dead ball. You don’t want that to happen. It’s so easy to say this. Do I have a solution for it? As I think about it, I don’t right now,” the 40-year-old added.
Once bowler appeal for Caught behind and umpire give out, ball become dead after that.

Sri Lanka could score just two runs in the Super Over bowled by Arshdeep Singh. Kusal Perera (0) was caught at deep point on the first delivery, and Shanaka (0) edged one to deep backward point. India required only a single ball to chase down the target.
