The 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL) got underway on Saturday, March 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. It marked the historic day kicking off the inaugural season of the tournament. The Mumbai Indians took on Gujarat Giants in the opening match of the Women’s Premier League.
The five teams – Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants, UP Warriorz, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore built their teams during the auction last month. The Board of Contro for Cricket in India hosted a grand opening on Saturday, before the opening game. Bollywood stars like Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani, and rapper AP Dhillon graced the ceremony with their performance.

During the opening ceremony, the captains, Harmanpreet Kaur, Beth Mooney, Smriti Mandhana, Alyssa Healy, and Meg Lanning unveiled the stunning Women’s Premier League trophy. Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and others took to social media to share wishes on the beginning of the new era in Indian women’s cricket.

2023 Women’s Premier League format
The 2023 Women’s Premier League will take place at two venues in Mumbai, the Brabourne Stadium, CCI, and the DY Patil Stadium. Each team will play against the other once. A total of 20 league matches will be played, before the playoffs. The top-ranked team will directly qualify for the final. Meanwhile, the second-ranked and the third-ranked team will play the elimination on Friday, March 24 at the DY Patil Stadium. The final will take place on Sunday, March 26 between the top-ranked and the winner from the eliminator at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
