KL Rahul Creates Record With Third Test Century As Asian Opener In England
KL Rahul etched his name in the record books during the ongoing first Test against England by becoming the first Asian opener to score three centuries in Test matches on English soil. In achieving this feat, he surpassed renowned names like Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, Ravi Shastri, and Tamim Iqbal — all of whom managed two centuries as openers in England.
Rahul’s maiden Test ton in England came in 2018 at The Oval, where he played a gritty knock of 149 off 224 deliveries in India’s second innings. His second century in the country followed in 2021 at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground, where he scored 129 off 250 balls in the opening innings.
With this latest hundred, Rahul now has a total of nine Test centuries in his career, with a remarkable eight of those coming in overseas conditions. He has scored just one century in home Tests. In the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rahul has stepped up as a dependable figure in the batting lineup, having also contributed a solid 42 runs in the first innings.
