Team India opener KL Rahul greeted Rishabh Pant with folded hands in a light-hearted gesture after Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. A video of the moment went viral on social media, showing the Indian team applauding Pant and Shubman Gill for their brilliant partnership.
Pant came out to bat after tea, following the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was bowled by Ben Stokes from around the wicket. Despite the pressure, the vice-captain showed great composure and reached his half-century in 90 balls. He remained unbeaten on 65 at the end of the day, with India in a strong position at 359/3.

The 91-run opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul gave India a strong start before England hit back with two quick wickets. Still, the visitors regained control with two century partnerships—first between Jaiswal and Gill, and then between Gill and Pant, who remains unbeaten on 138. Among England’s bowlers, Ben Stokes claimed two wickets, while Brydon Carse picked up one.
Rishabh Pant Surpasses Rohit Sharma For Most Sixes In WTC History On Day 1 In Leeds
The 27-year-old Rishabh Pant, who will continue his innings on Day 2 at 65*, has surpassed Rohit Sharma’s record for the most sixes in World Test Championship (WTC) history. Rohit had hit 56 sixes, while Pant now has 58, placing him second only to Ben Stokes, who leads with 83.
Before the England series, there were doubts surrounding India’s batting strength, especially after the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, the younger players have stepped up impressively. England will face a tough challenge on Day 2 as they look to limit India to a controllable total.
With Rishabh Pant in fine form, India’s lower order appears well-positioned to contribute significantly on Day 2. For spectators, the greater satisfaction lies in witnessing Pant continue to rewrite records while maintaining his trademark aggressive approach at the crease.
