Fans React As Shubman Gill Smashes A Double-Century In England

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill made headlines with his first-ever double hundred in Test cricket during the second match of the five-Test series against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The young batter reached this milestone after playing a patient and composed knock, taking 311 balls to get to 200.

Gill’s brilliant innings placed him among an elite list of Indian cricketers, becoming just the third Indian to score a Test double century in England. He now shares this rare achievement with Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 221 at The Oval in 1979, and Rahul Dravid, who scored 217 at the same venue in 2002. His knock featured 21 boundaries and two sixes, marking a powerful comeback for India after their earlier loss at Headingley, where they were defeated by five wickets.

Captaincy Boost and Positional Change Success

Shubman Gill’s performance is particularly significant as it comes early in his journey as India’s Test captain. In just three innings as captain, he has already registered two centuries, showcasing both form and leadership. This latest achievement has not only inspired confidence among his teammates but also provided a sense of assurance to selectors.

An interesting change that might have contributed to his performance is the adjustment in his batting position. He moved down from No. 3 to No. 4, a shift that appears to have benefited his batting style. Born in Fazilka, Gill seems to have adapted well to this new role, taking responsibility during challenging phases and turning the match in India’s favour.

Partnership with Jadeja Turns the Game

Gill entered the crease when India was in a tricky situation, having lost Karun Nair with only 95 runs on the board. He remained focused as wickets kept falling around him. It was Ravindra Jadeja who provided the much-needed support, and together they formed a game-changing partnership. Their 203-run stand for the sixth wicket proved vital, especially when India looked under pressure.

Jadeja narrowly missed a century but played a key role in steadying the innings. By the end of Day 2, Gill had scored 222, setting a new record for the highest Test score by an Indian in the UK, surpassing Gavaskar’s long-standing record. Social media platforms were filled with admiration for Gill, hailing his brilliant performance and celebrating a new chapter in his cricketing journey.
